The train arrived at the Eastern Gate.

Angie shifted the large supply box against her hip and paused at the edge of the cafeteria car, taking a moment to breathe. She was the conductor responsible for the onboard dining service, and the final stretch of any route always left her arms aching and her feet numb.

But the car was empty now — every passenger had disembarked or was in the process of doing so — and through the rain-streaked windows, the Eastern Gate rose against the grey sky like something from a painting.

It was a magnificent structure. Commissioned decades ago at extraordinary expense, designed by the finest architects the eastern provinces had to offer, its soaring arches and carved stonework were the kind of thing that made you stop and stare no matter how many times you'd seen them. Today, slicked with rain and half-veiled in low cloud, the gate had a melancholy grandeur that suited the weather.

The platform was quiet. Most passengers had already departed, and boarding for the return journey wouldn't begin for some time. The only sound was the rain — a steady, silver curtain of it, unusual for this region, lending the station a hushed, dreary quality, as though the world had drawn its curtains and dimmed the lamps.

Angie glanced up at the heavy clouds, drew a long breath, and quickened her pace.

"…Hm?"

There was a scent in the air.

It was faint at first — carried on the damp breeze that drifted through the open sides of the platform — but unmistakable. The smell of a forest after rainfall. Angie looked around.

A man stood beside one of the platform columns, just outside the sheltered area, where the rain could almost reach him.

He was standing in shadow — the column's bulk and the angle of the overhanging roof conspired to keep his face obscured — but his silhouette was clearly that of a young man. Tall. Still. Leaning against the stone with the unhurried posture of someone who had been there for a while and intended to remain for a while longer.

*Is he watching the rain? Waiting for someone?*

The boarding platform was on the opposite side of the station. There was no practical reason to stand here unless you wanted to be alone — or unless you wanted to see something the other side didn't offer.

Angie stopped walking and stared at him.

She didn't realize she was doing it. Her feet simply ceased to move, and she stood there — box balanced on her hip, rain misting her hair — caught in the particular stillness that surrounded him like a field.

It wasn't just her.

The few people still crossing the platform — porters, a late-departing passenger, a station worker with a lantern — glanced in his direction as they passed. Every one of them. Angie remained rooted in place, breathing in that strange, green scent, unable to take a step.

It nagged at the edges of her memory. Her regular passengers were mostly wealthy middle-class travelers, with the occasional newly rich commoner mixed in. Angie spun around.

"Six days ago…" Angie's brow furrowed. Then her eyes widened. "Oh! Yes — yes, I was."

The tension in her shoulders eased fractionally. *That.* Of course. Everyone wanted to ask her about *that.*

It had been the single most dramatic event of Angie's professional career — and she had spent the days since it happened fielding an endless parade of questions from colleagues, officials, friends, acquaintances, and total strangers who had heard the story secondhand and wanted details.

She had nearly gone mad from it.

Six days ago, armed men had appeared on the train — swords drawn, faces hard — and taken the passengers hostage. Angie among them. What followed was a nightmare of shouting and steel and the particular animal terror that comes from knowing, with absolute certainty, that you are about to die.

Then the forest people had come.

Representatives of one of the woodland clans — which one, Angie never learned — had boarded the train and engaged the armed men in a fight that turned two passenger cars into a battlefield. A blade had been swung directly at Angie's face. She'd had just enough time to see the light catch the edge before everything went black.

When she opened her eyes, it was over. The armed men were gone. The forest people remained for a time — silent, watchful, keeping to themselves — before quietly disembarking a few stops later without a word.

There had been no casualties. That fact still felt miraculous.

Angie had since learned, through the whispered conversations of her colleagues, that the armed men had been members of the Red Chariot Guild — the criminal organization that had risen to infamy in the eastern provinces through illegal auctions and underground fighting rings. And she had learned, with considerably more bitterness, that Great Lord Akitas had sent his personal investigator to look into the incident — a gesture that was purely ceremonial.

Everyone on the train knew why. Akitas and the Red Chariot's guildmaster were in a *close relationship* — the kind that involved large sums of gold changing hands at regular intervals. There would be no punishment. No consequences. No justice.

*Isn't that exactly what a ruler should prevent?* Angie thought savagely. *People like that walking free while the rest of us —*

"The person I'm looking for was on that train," Hardin said, cutting cleanly through the current of her indignation.

His voice dropped slightly as he began to describe the passenger — and despite herself, Angie listened.

A woman. Early twenties. Light brown hair. Blue eyes. Traveling alone.

He produced a small portrait — hand-drawn, on good paper, rendered with careful skill. The woman depicted had a calm, steady gaze and features that were quietly, unmistakably beautiful.

"Do you remember her?"

"Yes," Angie said immediately. Her eyes brightened. "Of course I remember."

She forgot her grumbling the instant she saw the portrait. Women traveling alone on this route were uncommon enough to be memorable, and *this* woman —

Angie remembered her vividly.

"As far as I recall, she was traveling to the Eastern Gate to meet her husband."

Something shifted in Hardin's face. It was subtle — barely perceptible — but for the first time since the conversation began, the stone-wall blankness of his expression showed a hairline crack. A faint, brief lightening, as though a lamp had been turned up behind frosted glass.

The woman wore black. Veil, dress, gloves — all black, all dark, the palette of mourning or concealment. And married women traveling to meet their husbands did not dress as though they were attending a funeral.

There had been something else, too — something in the woman's bearing that Angie could not quite name. An atmosphere. The man in dark raised one hand — a small, unhurried gesture — and Hardin fell silent.

Then he looked at Angie and smiled.

"Is that what she told you?" he asked. His voice was quiet, gentle, pitched just above the sound of the rain. "That she was going to see her husband?"

"Y-yes," Angie managed.

Her voice came out as a stammer. She couldn't help it. Something had taken hold of her — not fear, exactly, but the breathless, tingling awareness that comes from standing too close to something you don't entirely understand.

His eyes were red.

Not brown. Not amber. *Red* — the deep, clear crimson of dark garnet or old wine held up to firelight. Cold eyes, she thought at first. Eyes that seemed emptied of emotion, as though whatever lived behind them had been packed away and locked somewhere unreachable.

The woman who had called herself Lillian Seneca had been lying. Angie had sensed it on the train, and she was certain of it now.

The name was false. The identity was false. The story about the husband was false.

And the reason she had boarded that train under an assumed name, wearing a black veil and the expression of someone in mourning — the reason she had hidden her extraordinary face and spoken as few words as possible and carried herself with the careful anonymity of a person trying very hard not to be found —

Was *this man.*

Angie's arms tightened around the supply box, which had nearly slipped from her grasp. She took one step back. Then another.

Whatever Lillian Seneca's real name was, whatever her true circumstances were — she was *running.* Running from someone, running *to* something, or simply running — Angie couldn't say. But the woman had gone to extraordinary lengths to disappear, and this man was here looking for her, and Angie did not need professional intuition to understand that telling him everything she knew might lead somewhere she didn't want to be responsible for.

She couldn't determine, from a single conversation on a rainy platform, whether this man was a lover separated from his beloved by cruel fate — or something else entirely. Something darker. Something the woman had been right to flee from.

*I don't want anyone to get hurt because of me.*

Angie set her jaw.

"I'm sorry, sir," she said, and this time her voice was steady — truly steady, anchored by a conviction that had nothing to do with work ethics and everything to do with the look she had seen in Lillian Seneca's eyes. "I can't provide you with any of the passenger's personal information."

The man regarded her for a moment. His expression did not change. The smile remained — faint, patient, entirely unthreatened.

"I wasn't going to ask you that," he said calmly. "You don't need to worry."

Angie held her ground. Whatever he said, she had made her decision. She would not give him a single detail — not a destination, not a ticket number, not a direction of travel. She would take what she knew and lock it behind her teeth and —

"Is she all right?"

Angie blinked.

"…What?"

"I was told there was an incident on the train." He paused. The smile was gone now, and without it, his face was harder to read — not blank, not cold, but *guarded,* as though something behind the composure was pressing against the walls. "She wasn't hurt?"

The question was quiet.

Quieter than it should have been. Quieter than the rain, quieter than the distant rumble of the idling locomotive, quieter than the pulse hammering in Angie's ears.

It was the voice of a person exercising very precise, very deliberate control over something that threatened to overwhelm him if he let it.

Angie felt a chill run through her that had nothing to do with the weather.

She had heard voices like this before — rarely, in the worst moments of the worst days, when someone came to the station looking for a person who had been on a train that had derailed or a carriage that had overturned. The voice of someone who already knew the answer might destroy them and was asking anyway, because not knowing was worse.

Angie looked at him.

The red eyes. The white sandalwood. The stillness that had stopped an entire platform in its tracks. The smile that had made her stomach do something unauthorized.

Angie's resolve, which had been built on the assumption that this man was dangerous to the woman he sought, wavered — just slightly, just at the edges — and she found herself standing on a platform in the rain, holding a box of cafeteria supplies, with absolutely no idea what to think.
