The entrance to the Marquis Ethel's residence.

The moment the carriage door opened, the youngest lady of the Ethel family swept into the mansion. The servants, who had been on edge since the carriage first rolled through the gates, bowed with exaggerated deference.

"Welcome home, my Lady."

But unlike her usual manner, Maria strode past without acknowledgment.

"Where is my father?"

Her sharp voice drew a servant forward. Then again—the odds of her father being home were slim. He was more likely gambling and drinking on Laheir Street.

But then the servant gestured toward the first floor.

"The Marquis is in the drawing room at present."

Maria blinked—then broke into a brilliant smile.

It seemed fortune was on her side. She had never imagined she would find her busy father so readily!

Maria hurried toward the drawing room. The servant, relieved to have navigated the exchange without incident, suddenly realized his mistake.

"My Lady!"

The Marquis had given strict orders: no one was to enter or leave after the Duke of Elkin arrived.

The servant moved to follow—then froze. In the hallway leading to the drawing room, a massive stag-hunting trophy loomed overhead, its empty eye sockets set with bright blue jewels. Those gemstone eyes seemed to mirror the Marquis Ethel's own cold gaze.

A chill ran down the servant's spine.

The young Lady could go where she pleased—but servants like him were another matter entirely. Especially in this household, which was more merciless than any other noble family.

The servant hunched his shoulders and retreated to his duties.
